In Detroit, brave passengers on Northwest Flight 253, knowing what happened on United Flight 93, throw caution to the wind as they work to subdue a would-be terrorist bomber.

In Washington, DC, despite all evidence that’d be obvious to Helen Keller, Janet Nepolitano declares that “The System Worked”.  The system, apparently, being the keen ability of the TSA, State Department, and Federal Government to fail on every possible level to detect and detain an Al Qaeda terrorist armed with an underwear  bomb made by the top Al Qaeda bombmaker in Yemen; a terrorist whose own father warned the US government about him, and whose mission was plotted by 2 Al Qaeda idiots released from Gitmo in 2007.

In Hawaii, 3 hours after the incident, Obama is made aware (personally, I knew from CNN as it was happening).  The TelePrompTer of the United States then takes three days to respond to the event.  After golfing, of course.  After all, a man has to have his priorities…  (and it certainly isn’t church on Christmas).

I’m working on a post on the new Amnesty Bill, but then Bernie Sanders (Independent Socialist – Vermont) introduced an amendment to the health care bill.  Remember the post I did about keeping things in focus?  Remember all the bellyaching over whether the Dems would keep the public option, abortion, etc.?  Well…  it’s all B.S.  And here comes their brother in arms, Der Kommisar to act as a proxy for the far-left wing of the Divided Donkey Party.  It’s an amendment to basically extend Medicare to everyone (because Medicare is such a well-run bureaucracy that isn’t likely to bankrupt, say, in the next week or two).

On it.

On it.

Fortunately, people are paying attention.  Michelle Malkin is reporting that Sen. Coburn  (Pachyderm-OK) was all over it like a diabetic on a cheesecake.  He’s having the Clerk of the Senate read the amendment…  all 767 pages of it.  The Dems, because they’re obviously not socialists, are trying like mad to stop the reading, but now Jim DeMint (Pachy-SC) has joined in his concern that Senators might not fully understand what they’re voting on, making it necessary that the bill be read aloud in public.

Snicker.  Keep up the good work, fellers.

Infamy

Mr. Vice President, Mr. Speaker, members of the Senate and the House of Representatives: Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 — a date which will live in infamy — the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

The United States was at peace with that nation, and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its Government and its Emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific. Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese Ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.

It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time the Japanese Government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.

Yesterday the Japanese Government also launched an attack against Malaya.

Last night Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.

Last night Japanese forces attacked Guam.

Last night Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.

Last night the Japanese attacked Wake Island.

And this morning the Japanese attacked Midway Island.

Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.

As Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense.

But always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us. No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.

I believe that I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.

Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger.

With confidence in our armed forces—with the unbounding determination of our people—we will gain the inevitable triumph—so help us God.

I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7th, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese Empire.

We will never forget.

Heroes…

President Obama arrives at Arlington National Cemetary

There’s little more that I can say that hasn’t already been said.  We are eternally grateful to you all for the blood, sweat, and tears you’ve given to your country – things we’ve done little to deserve.

Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine, Reservist…  we here at Pachyderms salute all of you.

It is truly an honor for a blog as young as ours to be selected to participate in Project 2,996.  We here at Pachyderms have been selected to honor the memory of Michael Joseph Duffy.

Michael Joseph Duffy, We Will Never Forget You

Michael Joseph Duffy, We Will Never Forget You

29-year-old Michael Duffy was newly employed at the Keefe, Bruyette & Woods Investment Bank , and was among 67 employees of the firm that were killed when United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower at the World Trade Center in New York City.

It is not his job, however, that dominates the memories of those who knew him.

The most common words I’ve seen to describe Michael were “friend”, “brother”, and “smile”, common for a man who left behind those three things wherever he went.  He was often chosen as a Best Man at weddings, and had served in that role in five weddings in the year prior to September 2001.  His charm, smile, and personality impressed and gained friends, although some have said his best friend was a yellow Labrador retriever named Dickens.

While his life was all too short, the rich tapestry of friends he left behind is perhaps a better tribute than I could possibly type out in words.  The blessing of life God gave him was as rich as the blessing his life was on those who knew him.

Rest in Peace, Michael.  You have not and will not ever be forgotten.

The mortal remains Michael Scott Speicher, US Navy Pilot shot down over Iraq during the first Gulf War, have come home.

We are not worthy of the sacrifice you’ve made.  We are and will be eternally grateful for it, and will work to honor it.
